The first thing you need to do is make sure the medical transcription school’s classes and credentials. The school’s instructors should be registered as a RHIT, Registered Health Information Technician or CMT, Certified Medical Transcriptionist.


To find out if they’re CMT or RHIT registered, you can check with the American Health Information Management Association and the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity.

Some schools are not accredited, so you need to make sure the medical transcription school of your choice is. You’ll also want to check to see if they offer the courses you need and that they use the resources you require to become a verifiable medical transcriptionist. The equipment they use is also important. It needs to be the actual software that you’ll be using to do your job in the future.

Medical Transcription School Course Content

The AHDI, or Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity, provides these recommendations for medical transcription coursework:

 

  • English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and medical style guidelines
  • Computer skills, transcription equipment proficiency, internet and word processing skills
  • Medical knowledge including terminology, surgery, pharmacology, pathology and more
  • Live dictation at beginner, intermediate and proficient status
  • Healthcare record documentation, professional practice and confidentiality

Also check to make sure your medical transcription school choice is involved in the health community and has established contacts in the field. If they provide help with job placement, that’s a big plus. Having the right contacts and providing you with help finding a job are important factors you should consider before selecting a school.
