You may opt to go into business for yourself, or choose to work for another company. Either way, providing medical transcription from home allows you to be independent and work as you please. Going to school and training to get some qualifications or certification will certainly help you in finding work as a transcriptionist or in your own home business.
Work at home medical transcription
Many people recognize the opportunity offered by providing transcription services from home-to either medical or legal professionals or both. (Check out discharge transcription services and medical transcriptionist salary too)
As a home-based medical transcriptionist, you’ll be responsible for quickly and accurately transcribing medical records. All health care professionals, including doctors, dentists, hospitals and clinics need transcription work done. There’s a whole range of documents that need to be transcribed such as notes, pathology reports, X-ray reports, psychiatric evaluations and discharge documents.
Medical transcription jobs from home
Jobs for medical transcription began in the United States, but are now often outsourced to other countries where the work can be completed for less money than in the US.
Many companies like Heartland Information Services are using a new way to get their medical transcription done. They’re using work-at-home professionals with a business design that makes the job easier. You pay them a fee to have their software installed on your computer, and then you use that to work on their medical transcription records.
Acusis is another company following this business model. They provide the at-home worker with Acusuite, which is software that is used to give you access to their audio files and allows you to complete the medical transcription and then send the documents back to the person requesting them.
A third company, iQ Infotech, also uses this same type of business model. The work-at-home transcriptionist is allowed access to the company’s website in order to do the work for them.
Working as a medical transcriptionist at home
What you need to become a home-based medical transcriptionist: you’ll need a good computer with high-speed internet, a lot of storage (at least 20 gigabytes) and a good set of quality headphones. Turnaround time for documents is around 6 hours, so you’ll need to work quickly and accurately. Usually the data needs to be finished and sent to the employer by the end of the day. It’s also very important that you understand English, preferably as your native tongue. It also helps to have knowledge in the medical field, especially the terminology used.
